How it works
Your permit, in five steps
From picking your kit to breaking ground — here's exactly what happens once you order a permit package.
-
Step 1: Size & select your solar system
Pick your solar equipment kit from our site — panels, inverters, racking and battery storage. Specific products are required on the permit application, so lock in your components first.
Not sure what you need? Request a free solar proposal.
-
Step 2: Purchase your permit package
Choose the Standard or Solar + Battery package based on your setup. Think of it as a small deposit that gets your project moving before you commit thousands to hardware.
-
Step 3: Complete your remote site survey
We work 100% online to keep costs low and turnaround fast — so you are our eyes on the ground. Upload a few key photos and property details through our simple portal.
-
Step 4: Pull your permit
Contact your local building department to open the permit application and submit the PE-stamped plan set we deliver. Revisions requested by your AHJ are included.
-
Step 5: Permit approval & installation
Once your permit is approved, finish your kit order and start installing.
Some counties allow installation to begin before approval — confirm with your building department first.

Permitting questions
Frequently asked questions
Everything DIY builders and contractors ask us before ordering a permit package. Still unsure? Our permit specialists are a call away.
Talk to a permit specialistMost grid-tied systems need a building and/or electrical permit before you connect to your panel or the grid, and many off-grid installs do too. Requirements vary by county, so confirm with your local building department before ordering equipment — our team can help you figure out what applies to your project.
Revisions related to our design work are included. Send us the AHJ comments and we'll update your plan set — typically within 2–3 business days — and keep going until your permit is approved.
That depends entirely on your local building department. Our engineering packages meet all national codes, but you should check with your city or county office to see if homeowner-builder permits are allowed in your area.
Once you've completed your remote site survey, Standard packages are delivered within 5–8 business days and Solar + Battery packages within 8–15 business days. You'll receive your site survey portal link within 24–48 hours of ordering.
No — you submit the PE-stamped plan set to your building department and utility yourself, which is what keeps our pricing low and turnaround fast. We tell you exactly what to send, and we handle any corrections they come back with.
If your permit application is rejected and you haven't made any misrepresentations or omissions, let us know in writing within 30 days of the denial and we'll refund the service fee in full. Revision requests from your AHJ don't count as a rejection — those are simply included.
No. Permit fees are set by your county (usually $100–$500) and are paid directly to your local office when you submit your application.
