Short on Time? Here’s The Article Summary
EcoFlow, a San Francisco-based battery manufacturer, has quickly become a leader in the portable generator sector. Founded in 2016, the company gained attention with its EcoFlow River Portable Power Station, launched in 2017 after a successful Indiegogo campaign. EcoFlow's innovative devices, including the popular Delta 1300, have earned them a spot on Forbes' "30 Under 30 List" in 2017.
The Delta 1300, funded through Kickstarter, boasts X-STREAM recharge technology, allowing for fast charging times. EcoFlow's products cater to various needs, with the River line designed for adventurers and the Delta series offering higher capacity and power output for more demanding applications. EcoFlow's competitors, such as Jackery and Bluetti, offer similar products, but EcoFlow stands out for its advanced technology, high capacity, and rapid charging capabilities.
Introduction
The meteoric rise of portable electricity generators in recent years has put many new companies into the spotlight. One such company, EcoFlow, has been the focus of media attention for the last five years, and for good reason.
EcoFlow is a San Francisco based battery manufacturer. Their factory is based in Shenzen, China, where over 80% of the world’s batteries and computer chips are made.
EcoFlow aims to be an industry leader in the portable generator sector. Their goal to “reinvent the way people everywhere access power” has led them to produce some of the most innovative devices on the market.
In this article, we’ll go over the company’s brief but impressive history. We’ll also cover the products they make that have put them at the forefront of clean energy.
Whether you’re looking for a portable power station for your camping trips, or you want to find a reliable backup generator for when municipal supply is unreliable, you’re in the right place.
We’ll also touch on some of EcoFlow’s competition, and what sets them apart from other battery pack manufacturers.
EcoFlow History
EcoFlow was established in December 2016. They launched their first product, the EcoFlow River Portable Power Station in June 2017, after a successful Indiegogo campaign raised over $1 million.
The company was founded by engineers from the drone manufacturing company DJI. While there, the engineers worked on perfecting a lightweight, reliable, and powerful battery for drones.
In November of 2017, EcoFlow was featured on Forbes’ illustrious “30 Under 30 List” in the Energy and Technology sector. This accolade put them at the forefront of portable, green generators and they’ve gone from strength to strength since.
In 2019, they started another crowdsourcing campaign, this time on Kickstarter. The campaign successfully raised over $5 million for their new product, the EcoFlow Delta 1300.
The Delta has since gone into production and been met with rave reviews from camping and generator enthusiasts.
X-STREAM Technology
Every EcoFlow device comes with proprietary X-STREAM technology. X-STREAM recharge technology allows EcoFlow devices to charge 10 times faster than any of their competitors.
The company won’t disclose exactly how the technology works. According to their press release, EcoFlow batteries use a sophisticated AI power Battery Management System to monitor and control the individual Lithium-Ion cells in the battery.
X-STREAM technology is what keeps the EcoFlow Delta 1300 charge time under 2 hours, from 0% to fully charged.
EcoFlow Products
EcoFlow has two lines of portable power stations. The EcoFlow River and the EcoFlow Delta. Each one of these power stations is impressive in its own right. We’ll cover each device briefly here.
We’ve already done an in-depth review of the EcoFlow Delta 1300. Be sure to check it out if it sounds like it’s for you.
EcoFlow River
The EcoFlow River was the company’s first foray into portable power stations. The River was designed with campers and adventurers in mind. It’s an ideal product to take on weekend trips to keep phones and laptops charged.
The River has a capacity of 288Wh, which can keep a mini-fridge running for around 4 hours.
The River comes with powerful X-Boost technology. This allows the device to increase its output to an impressive 1800W across 3 110V AC power outlets.
It’s lightweight and compact, so you can grab it and go at a moment’s notice and take it on your next great adventure.
Newer models of the River — the River Max and River Pro — are available to users looking for more capacity and modular design.
EcoFlow Delta
The EcoFlow Delta is the company’s newest iteration of portable power stations. Like the River, the Delta comes with patented X-STREAM technology that allows superfast charging times.
The EcoFlow Delta power is rated at 1800W, with 1300Wh capacity.
The device comes with a built-in MPPT charger, making the EcoFlow Delta 1300 compatible with solar panels straight out the box.
The generator is bigger and heavier than the River, but it comes with more than 4 times the capacity and twice the power outlets.
Competitors
There are many other manufacturers producing portable power stations. Some of these companies have been around for decades, others are relatively new kids on the block.
We’ll cover a few alternatives to EcoFlow portable power stations here.
Jackery
Jackery create portable power stations and generators to fit all needs. The Jackery 1000 vs the EcoFlow Delta 1300 provides some of the benefits, but it has several drawbacks.
The device is around the same price as the EcoFlow, but it has 300Wh less capacity and fewer power outlets.
It’s not all bad though. The Jackery 1000 is a highly durable device and runs almost silently.
Bluetti
Bluetti produce a wide range of battery packs and power stations. The Bluetti EB150 is the closest competitor to EcoFlow products.
The device performs well, however it falls short in comparing it against the EcoFlow’s capacity and power output. The EB150 is also considerably heavier than its counterpart.
