WHK Solar Kits: Frequently Asked Questions
Why are they called WHK solar kits?They are called WHK Solar Kits, or Whole Home Solar Kits, because they are designed to generate and store enough power to be a practical source of electricity for an entire regular, to small size home or shop. These kits are the most powerful ones we sell and give you the option to power your home’s electrical appliances and devices directly with solar power. The power inverters can handle significant electrical demands and they even give you the ability to grid-tie your system, or run it completely off-grid.
Lithium vs Lead Acid (AGM): What's Better?Lithium batteries are much lighter and tend to last much longer than lead-acid (AGM) batteries. AGM stands for Absorbed Glass Mat which is a for of sealed lead acid. This means they are still maintenance free and do not produce any harmful gases. However, many customer prefer lithium batteries now, which is why you will see them offered standard in our WHK's.
What does KwH mean?This is short for Killowatt Hours. It is a measurement of energy being stored inside of the battery(s). So if it says 15kwH lithium battery bank, this is the same as saying 15,000wH (watt hours). You multiply KwH by 1,000 to get watt hours. So think of this as "the size of battery bank" ... the bigger the kwh the longer the battery will last.
How long will the battery bank run my appliance(s)?Now that we know what KwH means, we simply multiply it by 1,000 to get watt hours and then divide the total watt hours by the size of your load(s).For example, if you have a 15kwh battery bank, x 1000 = 15,000wH. If you want to know how long it will run a fridge with a 100W load, it's 15,000/100W = 150 hours of straight run before it would need to be recharged.
How long will it take to recharge battery bank from solar?To calculate this, it's the opposite of how calculated the run time in the question above.Since we now know what KwH means, we simply multiply it by 1,000 to get watt hours and then divide the total watt hours by the size of your solar panel array. For example, if you have a 15kwh battery bank, x 1000 = 15,000wH. If you want to know how long it will take to recharge from 0%, it's 15,000/total array size in watts = recharge hours (approx).So if you have a 15,000wh battery and a 6.5kw or 6,500W array it's, 15,000/6500 = 2.5 hours (approx). This depends on quality of sun, overcast etc. This assumes a very solid sunny day.
Can I use a backup generator to charge the battery bank?Yes of course! You can set the system so that when your battery bank reaches a certain low voltage point, it will search for AC input which can come from the grid or a backup fuel generator. The rule of thumb with a backup generator is to be at least 1.5x the size of your inverter. So if you have a 5,000W inverter, you'd want a 7,500W backup generator.
What does pure sine wave mean?Pure Sine Wave refers to the type of power inverter being used to convert direct current (DC) power into alternating current (AC) power. Where the less sophisticated Modified Sine Wave Inverters generate inconsistent and volatile electrical waves, Pure Sine Wave Inverters produce steady and continuous waves of electricity. Not only does this protect your electronics and allow them to run more efficiently, it means that all of your electronic appliances and devices will be compatible, which would not be the case with a Modified Sine Wave Inverter. As you would suspect, all of our WHK Solar Kits feature Pure Sine Wave Inverters. In fact, we don’t even bother selling Modified Sine Wave Inverters, as we feel they have no place in a modern solar power system!
Are the WHK solar kits hard to install?Our WHK Solar Panel Kits were designed for simplicity and ease-of-installation. This is why we include setup instructions, wiring diagrams, and ongoing customer support. While those that have limited experience may strongly consider hiring a master electrician and/or professional solar installer for peace of mind, our WHK kits come with everything you need to get up and running (aside from grounding and solar panel racking).

How do I choose the right WHK solar panel kit?
A WHK Solar Panel Kit, or Whole Home Solar Kit, is designed to give you the option of both grid-tied and/or off-grid solar capabilities. In other words, you can convert your home over to solar power, but still retain access to power from the electrical grid…. If you want. However, WHK systems also work 100% off-grid.
First, you need to consider your specific power requirements. What are you planning to run off of solar power? If you are just looking to lower your utility bills and have a reliable source of backup power for emergencies, the base-level WHK might be enough; however, if you are looking to go completely off the grid, one of the two larger kits will be more appropriate.
Remember, the larger kits also come with more solar panels, so if you have the room (and budget) for them, you will want to take advantage of the faster battery recharge rate that an increased number of panels will offer. When you live off-grid, your home will be running off of your battery bank every night when the sun is not shining, so the bigger the battery bank, the more power you have when the sun is NOT shining.
