Solar Module Definition
A solar module, often interchangeably referred to as a solar panel, is a standalone, assembled unit that houses multiple photovoltaic (PV) cells designed to convert sunlight into electricity. These modules serve as the building blocks in larger photovoltaic systems, acting as intermediaries between individual solar cells and extensive solar arrays.
Each solar module is typically encased in a protective frame, often made of aluminum, and covered with a transparent layer, usually made of tempered glass or other durable materials, to shield the delicate PV cells from external environmental factors. This protective structure ensures the longevity and efficiency of the module, enabling it to function optimally under varying conditions.
The solar cells within the module, primarily fabricated from semiconductor materials like silicon, work by absorbing photons from sunlight. This absorption process leads to the excitation of electrons within the cells, thereby generating direct current (DC) electricity. This DC output can subsequently be transformed into alternating current (AC) via inverters, rendering it suitable for most common electrical applications.
Solar modules come in various sizes, power ratings, and technological configurations, catering to diverse requirements, from small-scale installations like portable chargers and residential rooftops to large-scale deployments in solar farms. Their widespread adoption is driven by the global push towards renewable energy sources, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate climate change.
