How to Calculate Wattage

The equation considers three variables: wattage, current, and voltage. Watts are the unit used to mature power, amps are the unit used to measure current, and volts are the unit used to measure voltage.

The formula used is the following: P = VI. We know that these symbols can scare some people, so the formula in words is power equals voltage multiplied by current.

This means that in order to determine the power (which is what wattage measures), you’ll need the two other variables: voltage, and current.

The voltage of your solar panels should be in the owner’s manual or written somewhere on the back of the panel itself. It’s usually between 12 and 24 V per panel.

The current isn’t as simple, but there’s an easy-to-use tool that’ll help you called a multimeter. You simply connect the device to your system, and it gives you a reading. Single solar panels usually give you between 6 and 7.5 amps of power per day in full sunlight conditions.

P = V x I.

   = 12 x 6

   = 72W.
