1000 Watt Solar Panel Systems: EVERYTHING You NEED to Know

1000 watt solar panel system is one of the most popular sizes for solar panel arrays. BUT if you're wondering "is there such thing as a 1000 watt solar panel?" The answer is not yet. The biggest solar panels on the market today are around 400 watts (more on this shortly).

Since it's still not an option as of now, let's look at how you can reach 1000 watts of solar for your power system.

Although 1000 watts may not cover a large home’s annual consumption, 1000 watts (also known as 1 kilowatt) of solar is capable of producing plenty of usable electricity for cabins, workshops, RVs, or vans.  If you’re looking to install a 1kW solar panel system, we’ve created this helpful article to answer some of the most common questions.

Again, there is no such thing as a 1000 watt solar panel. In order to obtain 1kW of solar power, you will need to string together a few panels to reach your desired capacity which we look at further down in this article.

What is the largest solar panel you can buy?

Currently, the largest solar panel that you can buy in today’s market is going to be around 400 watts. The solar industry is constantly evolving with global innovation helping to move renewable energy forward, however we are still a ways away from a 1kW solar panel that would be the same physical size as the ones we know today.  That being said, there are still many high wattage solar panels available today.

How many solar panels do I need for 1000 Watts?

Most systems consist of 5 solar panels, each of which is 200 watts, or 10 solar panels, each being 100 watts.  Simple math will tell you that adding together the wattage of panels in each system will achieve 1000 watts, or 1 kilowatt. If you are looking for a plug and play, complete 1kW solar panel kit, there are a few ready to go options available online.

How to make your own DIY 1000 Watt solar panel kit

If you are looking to lower your utility costs at home or are building an off grid or mobile solar system, having 1000 watts of solar power will ensure a great amount of electricity generation. Sizing and sourcing the correct components is the most important part of building your own DIY kit.

Picking out the Best Setup

In order to choose the right solar panels, first you’ll have to know the amount of space available to mount the system. If you have ample room on a roof or plan to install a ground mounted system, then you have the freedom to choose your solar panel size and can shop around for good deals on higher quantity orders, such as ten 100 watt panels or five 200 watt panels.

Other Key Components of the System

Obviously, there are more than just panels that go into generating solar electricity.  For an off-grid DIY 1000 watt solar panel system, you will also need a charge controller, a battery, an inverter, and all of the necessary materials to mount and wire your system.

You can either source and install each of these components individually, or utilize a solar power generator

If you choose to go the more traditional route and plan to permanently install the different parts of your solar system, we have resources for you to learn more and compare models of:

Before you buy, it is important to make sure that your charge controller will be able to handle the amperage of your 1000 watt solar panel system.  The size of your battery and inverter will largely be up to both your budget and the amount of power you wish to store and use.

If you are not sure how large you need to size your battery or inverter, you can use our off-grid load calculator to help you determine the amount of watt hours needed to power your various devices.

Conclusion

We hope this article was helpful in both explaining what a1000 watt solar panel is and illustrating some of the ways in which you can achieve a 1 kilowatt system.
